Answers to Your Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about working with Kittleson Landscape, organized by service.
General
What services do you provide?
Full-service landscaping & hardscaping: landscape design, bed & plant installation, lawns (seed & sod), mulch, outdoor lighting, retaining walls, paver patios, walkways, lakeshore work, plus grading, water features, and rain gardens, custom-designed with our landscape architect.
What should I consider when hiring a landscape contractor?
Start with referrals, choose a company that works with a landscape architect for custom designs, and confirm they’re licensed and insured (ask for proof and references).
Can I do my project in phases?
Doing it all at once is the most cost-effective, but we can evaluate your project and recommend the best way to phase it.
What’s your experience with water conservation?
Extensive, proper grading, rain gardens, and rainwater harvesting reduce runoff and protect water quality.
How much does a landscape project cost?
It varies with scope and site conditions; projects typically range from $2,000 to $15,000+. We’ll meet on-site to discuss your vision.
What areas do you serve?
Madison and the surrounding area, including Dane, Iowa, Columbia & Sauk counties.
Landscape
Why is landscaping important?
It enhances your outdoor space, improves curb appeal, and increases property value.
Why do I need a landscaping professional?
The right experience and equipment ensure the project is built to last and safe to enjoy for years.
What plants do you recommend?
Hardy selections suited to Wisconsin, chosen to complement your home and goals; we can also create privacy with trees and screening.
Seed or sod for a new lawn?
Sod gives instant results; seed is more economical. Either way we scarify and hand-rake the soil and fertilize properly. Lawn restoration is also available.
Is low-voltage outdoor lighting efficient?
Yes, it’s energy-efficient and safe, can be automated or remote-controlled, and adds beauty, security, and highlights.
Hardscape
What is hardscaping and how does it benefit my property?
Non-living elements, patios, walkways, walls, and stone features, that add durability, function, and visual appeal with less maintenance.
How do I choose materials?
Based on design preference, climate, and use; we’ll help select natural stone or pavers that match your home and withstand local weather.
Does hardscaping help with drainage and erosion?
Yes, walls, permeable pavers, and grading manage runoff and reduce erosion.
How long does a project take?
A few days for a simple walkway or patio; several weeks for large or multi-level walls, we provide a timeline at consultation.
Do retaining walls or lakeshore projects need permits?
Taller walls and shoreline work may require permits (including DNR for lakeshore). We’ll advise and guide you through it.
Maintenance
What maintenance do you offer?
Seasonal spring & fall cleanups that keep your property healthy and tidy.
When should I schedule spring/fall cleanup?
Spring after the thaw; fall after leaves drop, before winter.
