Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
It depends on height. Most local municipalities require an engineered design and permit once a wall passes roughly four feet (measured from the bottom of the buried base course to the top). Shorter walls usually don't. We know the local thresholds, we'll tell you where your project lands, and we handle the engineering and permitting when it's needed.
What materials do you build with?
Two main families: engineered segmental block (clean, modular, lots of colors and textures) and natural stone, boulder and limestone outcropping for a more organic look. The right choice comes down to the wall's job, your home's style, and budget. We'll show you options that fit all three.
How do you build walls that survive our freeze-thaw winters?
This is where most failing walls go wrong. We excavate to a proper compacted granular base, build with the right batter (setback), and, critically, install free-draining gravel backfill and drain tile behind the wall so water escapes instead of freezing, expanding, and pushing the wall out. Taller walls get geogrid reinforcement tied back into the soil. That hidden engineering is why our walls stay put.
How tall can a retaining wall be?
There's no hard limit, but taller walls require engineering and reinforcement, and often it's better (and better-looking) to terrace a tall grade into two or more shorter walls with planting between them. We'll recommend the approach that's both structurally sound and attractive for your slope.
Will the wall handle our heavy clay soil and water?
Yes, and clay makes drainage even more important. Clay holds water and exerts more pressure on a wall, so the gravel backfill and drain tile we install aren't optional details, they're the heart of the job. Done right, water moves through and away rather than building up behind the wall.
How long does a retaining wall take to build?
A simple garden or seat wall can be a few days; larger, taller, or multi-level walls run a week or more. Excavation, base prep, and drainage take time to do right, and that's time well spent. We'll give you a realistic timeline at the consultation.
