Plantings & Garden Beds

Beds and Plantings That Thrive

We install trees, shrubs, perennials, and ground cover chosen to flourish in southern Wisconsin’s climate and your site’s specific conditions. The difference between a planting that thrives and one that struggles is what happens below the surface, so we get the soil prep, edging, and grading right before the first plant goes in.

Whether you want a low-maintenance foundation planting, a pollinator-friendly border, or a rain garden that manages runoff, we design and plant for year-round interest and long-term health.

Planting FAQ

What plants do you recommend for Madison-area yards?

We build around plants proven in USDA zone 5b, a mix of tough natives and reliable ornamentals. Favorites include serviceberry, ninebark, and viburnum for structure; coneflower, little bluestem, switchgrass, and Karl Foerster grass for movement and color; and arborvitae or spruce where you need year-round screening. The guiding rule is "right plant, right place", matching each selection to the sun, soil, and moisture it actually has.

When is the best time to plant in southern Wisconsin?

Spring (after the frost risk passes, generally mid-to-late May) and fall (September into mid-October, roughly six weeks before the ground freezes) are the prime windows, cooler temps and steady moisture let roots establish. With proper watering, container-grown stock can go in through most of the growing season. We avoid planting into the peak heat of midsummer or once the ground is freezing.

How do you handle our heavy clay soil?

Dane County clay is dense and drains slowly, so bed prep matters more here than almost anywhere. We amend with quality compost, loosen and grade for drainage, and where it's wet we'll build up beds or berms and lean on plants that tolerate "wet feet." Skipping this step is the number-one reason plantings fail locally, so we never do.

Can you create privacy?

Yes, layered evergreen and shrub screening is one of our most-requested jobs. We stagger arborvitae, spruce, and mixed shrubs for a fuller, faster screen than a single row, and we account for mature spread so it looks intentional, not crowded, in a few years.

Will deer be a problem, and can you plan around it?

In a lot of the Madison area, especially near wooded edges and the lakes, deer pressure is real. We design with deer-resistant species (think boxwood, spirea, ornamental grasses, many natives) and place more vulnerable plants closer to the house. No plant is truly deer-proof, but smart selection makes a big difference.

Do you design pollinator and native plantings?

Absolutely. Native perennials and grasses support pollinators, handle our climate with less fuss, and, once established, need less water and care than many traditional beds. They pair beautifully with rain gardens for a landscape that's as functional as it is good-looking.

Do you offer low-maintenance or rain-garden options?

Yes, we design hardy, low-care beds as well as rain gardens and water-conserving plantings that capture roof and driveway runoff while looking great. It's a smart fit for our clay soils and a great way to manage water on the property.

What areas do you serve for planting and garden bed installation?

We serve more than 35 communities across the greater Madison area, including Madison, Verona, Middleton, Mount Horeb, and Sun Prairie, spanning Dane, Iowa, Green, Sauk, Columbia, and Rock counties. See our full service area.
