Seed & Sod Lawns

A Great Lawn Starts Below the Surface

We grade and prepare the soil, address drainage, and establish your lawn by seed or sod depending on your timeline, budget, and site. Lawns are scarified and hand-raked to remove debris and fill depressions, then properly fertilized for strong, even establishment.

Sod gives you an instant, established lawn; quality seed delivers a cost-effective, deeply-rooted result. We’ll recommend the right approach and grass varieties for the sun, shade, and traffic on your property, and we handle lawn renovation and restoration too.

Lawns That Thrive in Southern Wisconsin

A thick, durable lawn here starts with cool-season grass varieties suited to Wisconsin and the right prep, proper grading, soil, and drainage before a single seed or roll of sod goes down. We install new lawns for homeowners and commercial sites across the greater Madison area, and our maintenance team can keep it healthy afterward.

Lawn FAQ

Seed or sod, which is better for my yard?

Both work well here; it comes down to timeline and budget. Sod gives you an instant, established lawn, controls erosion on slopes right away, and can be laid across most of the season. Seed costs less and tends to root more deeply over time, but it needs the right window and diligent watering. We'll walk your site and recommend the better fit, and sometimes we'll sod high-visibility or sloped areas and seed the rest.

What grass types do you use in southern Wisconsin?

We're in cool-season turf country, so we use blends of Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fescues. Bluegrass gives that classic dense, self-repairing lawn; fescues handle shade and drought better. We tailor the mix to your light and traffic, a shadier yard under mature trees gets a very different blend than a wide-open sunny one.

When is the best time to seed a lawn here?

Late summer into early fall (roughly mid-August through September) is the sweet spot, the soil is still warm, nights are cooler, and weed pressure drops, so cool-season grass establishes fast. Spring is the second-best window. Sod is more forgiving and can go down through most of the season with proper watering.

How do you prep our clay soil for a healthy lawn?

Clay is the make-or-break factor for Madison lawns. We correct grading and drainage first, then scarify and hand-rake to break up compaction, remove debris, and fill low spots, and we add topsoil or amendment and a starter fertilizer. Good prep is why our lawns root in instead of sitting on top of hard clay.

How soon can I use the new lawn, and how should I water it?

New sod typically needs about two to three weeks of careful watering before normal use and its first mow; seed takes longer to fill in. We give you a clear watering schedule, light and frequent at first, then tapering, because the first few weeks make or break establishment.

Can you fix winter salt damage and worn edges along driveways and walks?

Yes, de-icing salt burns turf along drives and sidewalks every winter here. We re-grade, re-establish those strips, and can specify more salt-tolerant edges so they bounce back instead of thinning out year after year.

Do you offer lawn restoration?

Yes, we renovate and restore tired, patchy, or weed-choked lawns in addition to new installations, getting you back to a thick, healthy stand of grass.

What areas do you serve for lawn installation?

We serve more than 35 communities across the greater Madison area, including Madison, Verona, Middleton, Mount Horeb, and Sun Prairie, spanning Dane, Iowa, Green, Sauk, Columbia, and Rock counties. See our full service area.
