Fresh Mulch, Clean Beds

More Than Just Good Looks

A proper layer of mulch retains soil moisture, suppresses weeds, moderates soil temperature, and protects plant roots through Wisconsin’s hot summers and cold winters. It’s one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost ways to keep a landscape healthy and looking maintained.

We refresh existing beds and mulch new plantings, with clean edging and full cleanup that give your landscape a crisp, finished look.

Mulch FAQ

How often should mulch be refreshed?

Once a year is the norm here, usually a spring top-up to restore depth, color, and weed suppression after winter. It's a refresh, not a rebuild: we add what's needed to bring beds back to about a 2–3" layer rather than piling new on top of old, which can suffocate roots.

How deep should mulch be, and what about around tree trunks?

Two to three inches is the sweet spot, enough to retain moisture and block weeds without smothering roots. And we never build "mulch volcanoes" against trunks; piling mulch on bark traps moisture and invites rot and pests. We keep it pulled back a few inches from trunks and stems, the way it should be done.

What kind of mulch do you use?

Shredded hardwood is our workhorse, it knits together, stays put on slopes, and breaks down to feed the soil. We offer natural and dyed options depending on the look you want, and we'll recommend what suits your beds and budget.

Why does mulch matter so much in our climate?

Madison swings from hot, dry summer stretches to hard freeze-thaw winters. Mulch buffers both, holding moisture during dry spells, insulating roots against temperature swings, and reducing the frost-heaving that can push young perennials out of the ground over winter. It's cheap insurance for everything you've planted.

Should I use rock instead of mulch anywhere?

Sometimes. Rock is great for drainage strips, downspout outlets, and low-maintenance zones where you don't want to re-mulch. For planted beds, though, organic mulch wins, it feeds the soil and holds moisture in a way rock can't. We'll help you use each where it makes sense.

Do you edge the beds, and can you combine mulch with other work?

Yes, crisp, spade-cut edging is part of a quality mulch install, and we haul away all debris before leaving. Mulching pairs naturally with spring cleanups and new plantings, and bundling them is the most efficient way to refresh the whole landscape at once.

What areas do you serve for mulch installation?
