Snow Removal FAQ
Straight answers from a crew that has managed Madison-area snow and ice for nearly four decades.
Do I have to call you every time it snows?
No, that's the whole point of a seasonal contract. We monitor every storm and dispatch automatically once snow reaches the trigger depth we agree on (commonly two inches for residential drives, and often lower for commercial lots where liability is higher). You wake up to a cleared property without lifting a finger or making a 5 a.m. phone call. If you'd rather pay per storm or only call us for big events, we offer that too, but most clients prefer the set-it-and-forget-it reliability of a seasonal plan.
How quickly will my property be cleared after a storm?
It depends on the size and timing of the storm and where you sit on the route, but our goal is to have residential drives and commercial lots cleared and safe by the time you need them, before the morning commute or business open. During heavy or long-duration storms we often make multiple passes rather than waiting for it to finish, so accumulation never gets ahead of us. Commercial clients with early hours or high foot traffic get prioritized scheduling, which we lock in before the season starts.
What's the difference between a seasonal contract and per-storm service?
A seasonal contract is one flat price for the whole winter regardless of how many storms hit, it makes budgeting predictable and puts you on our priority route. Per-storm (or per-push) billing charges you only for the events we service, which can suit properties that rarely need clearing. In a typical southern-Wisconsin winter, seasonal pricing tends to win out because we average 40-plus inches of snow across many separate events. We'll look at your property and your tolerance for variable cost and recommend the option that actually saves you money.
Do you handle ice, not just snow?
Yes, and around Madison ice is often the bigger hazard. Our freeze-thaw cycles melt snow during the day and refreeze it into sheet ice overnight, and that's where most slip-and-falls happen. We apply salt or surface-appropriate de-icers to driveways, walks, steps, and lots to keep them safe between plowing passes, and we monitor for the refreeze that follows a sunny afternoon. For commercial clients especially, documented ice control is an important part of limiting slip-and-fall liability.
Will plowing or salt damage my driveway, pavers, or plants?
Not when it's done by people who installed hardscapes for a living. We stake your driveway edges, beds, and pavers before the snow flies so the plow knows exactly where surfaces end, and we set blade heights to clear without gouging. On pavers and concrete we use de-icers that won't spall the surface or burn adjacent plantings the way cheap rock salt does, and we keep salt off planting beds and lawn edges. Protecting the landscape we've often built ourselves is exactly why property owners trust a landscaper with their winter work rather than a generic plow service.
Where does all the plowed snow go?
We plan that out during the site visit before winter. We identify snow-storage areas that won't block sightlines at the end of the drive, bury your plants, drain meltwater back across the surfaces we just cleared, or, for commercial lots, eat up valuable parking. On tight properties where piles have nowhere to go after a heavy season, we can arrange to relocate or haul snow off-site. Thinking about meltwater and pile placement up front is what keeps a cleared driveway from turning into an ice rink during the next thaw.
Do you service commercial properties and HOAs?
Yes. We handle commercial lots, office and retail entries, private roads, and homeowner-association common areas alongside residential drives. Commercial work carries higher stakes, open-by times, ADA-accessible entrances, and slip-and-fall exposure, so we set clear service triggers, prioritize those sites, and keep records of when each property was cleared and treated. We're insured, and we're happy to talk through the coverage and response expectations your property or association requires.
When should I sign up for the season?
Early fall is ideal. Routes fill up before the first snow, and signing on early means we can do the site walk, stake your property, and lock in your spot on the priority list while the weather is still cooperating. Waiting until the first big forecast usually means scrambling, and the best routes are often already full. If you're a current landscape-maintenance client, folding snow service into your plan is simple, and it keeps the same trusted crew on your property year-round.
